Erimitis is and will remain property of the Corfiot People

The response of the Association “Erimitis Plous…” to the commissioned articles of the last months about the “Kassiopi Project” (Erimitis Corfu).

The present document is concerned with the last two years’ commissioned articles of “works will soon resume” at the “Kassiopi Project”, at the unique Erimitis ecosystem and its imminent destruction with cement, which they present as an investment…

Before we present our position, we express our condolences to the families of the victims of the tragic accident in Tempi, and we join the vast nationwide movement of outrage and protest against those responsible (politicians and individuals), and we demand justice.

Erimitis, as mentioned above (we’ve been saying it for years), is a unique ecosystem, a fundamental element of the natural cultural heritage of the Municipal District of Kassiopi, the North of Corfu, and the island in general. As a landscape, it is a vital element of the tourist development of the region, based on quality small-scale tourism. As a pristine, unspoiled area, it is the ” lifeblood” of the local economy.

For years now, the powerful movement for Erimitis protection, spearheaded by “Erimiti Plous…” Association has been in every way fighting for its preservation, against the pursuit of illicit interests and the scandalous contracts of concreting over, as well as for its institutional protection and the prevention of any deterioration, which can be caused by any human or other destructive factor.

For all of us, it is of no importance whether the ownership of the Erimitis will change, as we occasionally read in the various commissioned articles, paid for communication purposes. Whether the current, so-called investing company leaves, in the face of adversities, and another one steps in, or other people, with destructive intentions, appear, the response will be the same. There have always been ownerships within the ecosystem and although there have been such transactions in the past, no one has dared to touch it!

CLEARLY AND CATEGORICALLY: Erimitis is ours and will remain ours, property of the Corfiot People. This is the decision of the local community and it is irrevocable!

On the basis of this decision, the Association “Erimiti Plous… “, along with all legal means, appeals to Justice and the contestation of the legitimacy of legal transactions, purchase and transfer contracts, as well as the existing pending litigations (which are several), in a public event that took place on 4th June 2022, has submitted for deliberation to the public dialogue, a scientifically documented comprehensive proposal, for the sustainable management and promotion of Erimitis ecosystem as a whole under formal protection status as a unique natural formation of its kind!

For everyone’s information: in order to accomplish these goals, the movement’s struggle has been long (more than 15 years) and multifaceted and will continue with the same determination, dynamism, and optimism on all fronts (legal, mobilization, communication) for as long as it takes… until victory!
