From the Association ERIMITI plous, Environmental Protection of the Coasts of the NORTH of Corfu
The Association thanks all those who participated with joy in the farewell of Erimitis through the annual autumn cleaning and bird watching.
We set off from St Stephen’s up to Avlaki and collected many bags of rubbish and plastic, as well as of many years abandoned large items found through the trees in Akoli.
Bird watching was held at Savoura Lake, which has proportionally more fresh water than the other two, and where we were met by Environmentalist, Forester Msc, Yannis Gasteratos. Yannis, a long-time lover of Erimitis, informed us not only about environmental realities and trends in Europe, such as rewilding, but also specifically about the particularities of Erimitis ecosystem, highlighting its connectivity with the national park of Boutrint. The connectivity of Erimitis is related to its proximity to the mainland (the distance between Corfu and Albania is in the area only 2 km), and allows, in addition to the continuous aller-retour of birds from one ecosystem to the other, the passage of many mammals. The participants were impressed by the fact that the passage of wild boars and jackals from Albania to Corfu has been recorded from time to time, as well as the passage of deers, in ancient times
