Kaparelli and the World Lighthouse Day

Κaparelli
Every third Sunday of August is celebrated the World Lighthouse Day and on this occasion it is worth writing a short post about the lighthouse of Peristeres or as the locals call it Kaparelli or even Tignoso. The rocky islet 🏝 of Peristeres (also known as ancient Pythia), is located in the northern strait between Corfu and Albania near Cape Barbaro, at the border of the Greek maritime frontier, and was built by the British in 1823, during the period of the Ionian Ionian State, and operated for the first time in 1828 with olive oil.
It has already been mentioned in previous posts that Kaparelli is considered part of Erimitis ecosystem, and for those of us who are fighting for its preservation, it’s interesting to know that the last colony of Rock Doves in Corfu is found there, as well as a colony of two species of herons: the Little Egrets and, from this year, the Cattle Egrets. It is noteworthy also that it is a roost for many birds of our wetlands, such as Cormorants, 🦤 Little Egrets, Great Egrets etc. from Corfu, (the Antiniotis Lagoon and Erimitis), but also from Albania, (Butrint park), which feel protected in the isolation of the rocky islet.
Thank you Giannis Gasteratos for the valuable info 🙏
